Realising the growing importance of Information Technology and Bio-technology
in the new millennium and the influence of Bio-technology on health,
agriculture and medicines, Dr. Patangrao Kadam, the Founder of Bharati
Vidyapeeth, established the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information
Technology and Bio-technology in September 2001. The University
Grants Commission recommended to the Govt. of India, in September
2002, to declare this institute as a constituent part of the Bharati Vidyapeeth University.
As the subject biotechnology bears affinity with other medical sciences and since the Bharati Vidyapeeth University's Medical College, Dental College and Hospital, Homoeopathic Medical College, College of Ayurved, College of Physical Education and the Interactive Research School of Health Affairs (IRSHA) are situated on the Dhankawadi Campus, in order to facilitate better interaction with these colleges in research projects, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology and Biotechnology is also placed in the Dhankawadi Campus.
The Institute provides excellent infrastructural facilities including separate laboratories with the state of the art equipment, for each of the different branches of Biotechnology, viz., Plant, Microbial and Animal Biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology, Tissue Culture and Bio-informatics, using computer-aided software for drug design and polymer research. Similarly, we have developed a good computer application laboratory with internet facilities, where the students can use sophisticated methods, such as silicon graphics for computer-aided drug designs in their research.
Hostel Facilities
Limited hostel accomodation is available. Students seeking admission
to the hostel are required to send application in the prescribed
form. The hostel accomodation is provided on the first come first
served basis.
Other Highlights
1) The Institute has sustained interaction with biotech industries,
pharmaceutical industries and agricultural industries. The experts
from these industries and medical fraternity are invited to give
informative talks and to guide students in research in biotechnology
and bio-informatics.
2) The Institute has collaboration for teaching and research, with Serum Institute of India, National Chemical Laboratory, University of Pune, National Institute of Virology, National AIDS Research Institute, B.A.R.C., and Cancer Research Institute, Mumbai
3) The Institute gives encouragement of faculty and students in their research and development activities. The post graduate students are absorbed for Ph.D. in Biotechnology field.
4) Internet facility has been provided to the students in the Computer Laboratory where they can look for jobs/placements/admissions for post doctoral fellowships etc., in India and abroad.
5) After getting the B.Sc. (Biotechnology)
degree, the students will have excellent prospects in pharmaceutical
industry and agricultural industry.
